Public Hearings
What is a Public Hearing?
A public hearing is an opportunity for citizens to speak about a matter to make their views known prior to a decision being made by City Council. In most instances,10 minutes are allocated per side (proponents and opponents) in adherence to the Zoning Procedures Law. Each speaker is encouraged to use no more than two minutes so that time may be shared among multiple speakers. The comment period is not interactive or a time for questions. If you have questions, please contact City Hall and staff will provide the requested information.
How do I speak during a public hearing?
To be sure speakers are properly recognized, citizens should sign up in person prior to the start of the meeting. Speakers should be considerate of other community members and refrain from derogatory comments and/or profane language. Speakers on the same topic should share time so that interested speakers may have an opportunity to be heard.
What do I do if I have questions?
To receive information and ask questions regarding a zoning action or public hearing matter, please contact City Hall during business hours (Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.).
How do the City Council & Planning Commission make decisions?
The Planning Commission makes non-binding recommendations to the Mayor and City Council. The Mayor and City Council make final zoning decisions. City officials must connect their decisions to community goals and adopted plans. Public opinion alone does not dictate decisions. Connecting applications and proposals to ratified plans and ordinances allows elected officials to make decisions that are legally sound, data-driven, and in alignment with approved standards and community goals.
