So I'm reading the article in today's Gwinnett Daily Post about the county looking to sell the Lawrenceville airport. Here's the article if you missed it -
I'm wondering what kind of impact this is going to have on Dacula. I guess there could be some benefits to having commercial flights available, close to here, and not having to go all the way to Hartsfield. But I'm just thinking of a whole lot more negative impacts in this that vastly outweigh the positives - Increasing the air traffic over our heads with commercial traffic would kindof be like turning the small county road, that runs right through a town, into an interstate.
Just curious to see what others in Dacula thought - since we are directly in the flight path.

Sounds like the county government is determined to put/keep Dacula in its place.
Just great...

They have private flights now. I doub't you will see commercial unless they buy more land and vastly expand the runways.

I understand they do have private flights now, but not to the levels that this NY Company wants to take it to.
The big change would come in this becoming a privately owed airport, with a private corporation doing what the want. Yes the will expand runways and yes they will buy more land.
Lots more air traffic over our homes, not only in the flight line but also in the areas where the plances woul be in a holding pattern, waiting to land.
There is still a lot that is not know in this, but from what I do know as of right now, I do not like it. Somebody is going to have to convince me otherwise.

Hey Chad! Didn't know that you used this forum...
I don't see how they could go forward with this plan, the runway is situated between Cedars Road on one side and Hi-Hope on the other. There just doesn't seem to be land available for 1000+' of additional runway for larger aircraft.

Read the article today online, Bannister says he's excited that so many people are fighting in support of this one! He said that it's a welcome change to the fighting that is usually against him (not sure if that was a poke against the library fight or not?).
I personally am TOTALLY AGAINST this idea. My house is literally about a mile from the runway and I can't imagine having larger aircraft in and out on a regular basis. Some may dream of the convenience, but I don't see the flights being affordable based on the amount of revenue that will have to go into building the terminal and expanding the property and runways like the article said is required.

Sounds good to me. The less business owned and controlled by the government, the better.

This topic is back in the news. There is a short survey attached to an announcement on this web site. You answers to this short survey will help the City to understand your concerns. As you know, the flight path into and out of Briscoe Field is over portions of the City. So we and our neighbors in unincorporated Gwinnett will be affected.
There are many ideas and opinions about whether privatization is a good or bad thing. Please check out the announcement, answer the survey and use this forum to help us understand your concerns.

Well, if it is privatized Dacula will be the "new" Chamblee. That should help our property values. not.

I was thinking more like Hapeville and College Park myself. Seems to be the trend anyway.

EXACTLY, Forever! :)) Especially with 316 right there. All the trucking companies and warehouses can move from SW Atlanta to HERE!!! Maybe even a train yard. Lots of good places to ruin build, right hear in Dacula. Ahhhh, the money that will bring to Gwinnett. We'll be rolling in the dough. Just ask Hapeville and College Park how that's workin' for 'em. But, never mind that....that would NEVER happen to Gwinnett! Our officials are too smart for that.

In today's AJC....Brett Smith...owner of Propeller Investments, the firm that wants to buy Briscoe, says the following:
" The opposition frustrates Brett Smith. He’s managing director of Propeller Investments, a firm that has expressed interest in buying Briscoe Field. The company wants to build a 10-gate terminal that could offer passenger flights to such destinations as New York and Chicago.
Smith said he wants to turn Briscoe Field into a “showcase for the community” that would create 20,000 jobs.
“At the end of the day, this is going to do a lot for a lot of people,” Smith said. “That’s what’s driving me to continue with this. It’s going to touch people that I’ll never meet.”
Really? Your doing this for the people?
No you are doing this for yourself and all the while trying to Rob homeowners of their dwindling home equity.
The PEOPLE...DO NO WANT THIS!!
Don't do us any favors.....JERK!!

Maybe I just don't understand, but how the heck would he create 20,000 jobs keeping Briscoe anywhere near the size it is now and without interrupting the communities around Briscoe? According to city-data.com, Dacula's population in July of 2008 was 4,662 - so this guy wants to create more than 4 times as many jobs as the number of citizens in Dacula? How?

Jeepermom....
He wants to expand the field....so that commercial flights come to Dacula. This means, increase traffic...more people coming to Dacula to work.
More crime..... college park yep!

That's what I was afraid I was reading...where the heck is he going to "expand" it to? This is definitely something I don't want...it's already bad enough with some of the late-night noise (like last night) from some of the planes...
Y'all are right though - it would be College Park, Chamblee, etc...and we don't want that! It's bad enough some of the stuff that has already happened to our little town...
